Anyone that knows me will you tell that I love to talk about work, and of course anything regarding the business of healthcare. I have been hot on healthcare reform for the past year, and I have to thank John for basically putting up with my constant antics on the subject. But this post is not about healthcare reform, it is about careers and finding a passion for a job, industry, etc that really makes you excited to get up and go to work everyday. I mean after all statistics say that the average person will work 86,000 hours in a lifetime. So my thought is you better make the time, and effort to go out and find something that you love to do.
I consider myself pretty lucky because I truly am passionate about what I do, and enjoy getting up and going to work everyday. I would have to say I am one of the few that can geniuinely state the words above. An article I read awhile back stated that less then 20% of the population actually likes what they do. My thought is why is that? Well my goal in the career sections of this blog is too help all of you wonderful people out there get the gusto and go out and figure out what you love! I am not going to say it happens overnight, because it doesn't. I am the Vice President of Business Development for a small healthcare company that develops outpatient surgery centers for GI procedures. Getting to be in this position didn't happen over night, it started with hard work, determination, passion, and a vision for where I wanted to be. I live by one of my favorite quotes of all time that was in Rick Pitino's last book "He only recruits players with a PHD, Passion, Hunger, and drive." With those three words sums up the main things that you need to do to get out there and follow your dreams People always ask me how did I get into this position or find a love for development/sales. It started when I was probably 15 years old, my first job sales job per say was selling heating pads in a mall kiosk at Christmans time. That Christmas I cleaned up, and realized that I loved being around people and bringing them something that had value. At that point my sales pitch was selling the value of getting your hands warm within 30 seconds, at this point in my career I am selling the value of lower cost of healthcare, and a higher quality care to GI doctors in order to help them develop their own business. Two totally different schools of thought, but with the same core passion to sell the product/service. Now I will be the first to say it is not easy to get to where you want to be, or to figure out. For a long time I thought I wanted to go the route of being an athletics administrator having done work for the NCAA throughout college. Then I really took the time to reflect on the things that I really enjoyed, and what I thought myself to be somewhat good at. I will always be the first to say to anyone in their twenties that doesn't know this already and anyone in college that is on their way out. You are not going to like your first job, because you have to pay your do's. Since graduating from Bentley in 2005 I have worked for 4 companies. During college I interned at WB Mason (yes, Red Sox green monster) and sold office supplies door to door. How glamorous was that? It wasn't, but let me tell you that experience I learned more about selling then any other. One of my favorite memories of that job was when I was with my sales manager and we were cold calling on 95 degree New England day in this office park. We walk in and ask to speak to the owner. Picture two overly bubbly female sales people asking the receptionist. This guy walks out and goes "Hi Ladies, how are you?" We respond "Great, how are you" The man proceeds to say " I am doing well, and what company are you from?" Our response "WB Mason" the man who is being offly friendly mind you proceeds to say "Oh really, where did you go to school?" and we say "Bentley and Stonehill" and the gentleman says "Good schools......(pause) well do you know how to read?) Steph and I look at each other and say simultaneously "Yes, why" then this guy who I have decided was a jerk says "Well you must have missed the no soliciting sign on the way in, so you can get out" Talk about deflated, and that my friends was my first real business rejection that I have not forgotten to this day but think is completely, and utterly hysterical. After Pepsi which was a short stint on my resume, I enterered the world of healthcare. Starting in pharmaceuticals, then on to medical device sales, and now my current role. If you add that up that will equal 4 different companies in 6 years. I am not saying start jumping around to all these different companies because that isn't a good choice either. Each opportunity that came before me provided a great financial reward, and higher reponsibility role. My belief is that I should have probably not gone with Pepsi because I knew it was not what I really wanted to do. I should have gone for a healthcare positoin at that time, but everything in life happens for a reason and that opportunity taught me many things that were invaluable in my next positions. My advice for anyone that is reading this is to ask themselves three questions; Do I like going to work everyday? Am I passionate about what I am doing? Is this opportunity helping me reach my dream job? If the answer to any of this questions is no, then start thinking about what really gets you excited and go after it! It doesn't have to be today, tomorrow, or the next day but at least consider it for yourself.
One of my good friends who is an extremely inspiring woman went on a job interview a few weeks back and possibly had one of the best responses to an interview question that I have heard in a long time regarding what her "Five Year Plan Was" Now she just had a baby so her answer was crafted off her family being the most important thing in her life but it was a great for anyone because if you are going to spend time in a job YOU need to be happy and want to be successful during the time you are out at work so you are not wasting your time (Life is too short!). "I can't necesarrilly predict the future or where I will be in five years, I can't put a title on the position I hope to be in because I have been a successful person and I know that I will be successful within this organization. Ultimately if I am going to spend 40-50 hours per week in this position away from my son, then I will not except anything but success as I am sacrifcing that time away from him and need to make the best of it."
I also understand we are in one of the worst economic downturns in American History, and I like all others am blessed to have a job right now and an income. But despite all the hardship around us, you need to have your dream for where you want to be. The foundation of our country is built of the idea of the american dream, but I believe in my individuals dreams and so should you. WHY? Because we deserve it!
So I leave you with two things this week:
1. Figure out the answers to the questions above, and start implmenting your own "PIP~ For Your Career" (PIP: Personal Improvmenet Plan)
2. Read the article Millenials in the Interesting Articles section of this blog. It is interesting and talks about our generation in the work place.
Enjoy!

May 29, 2010~ Truly The Best Day Of My Life
Everyone always says their wedding day is the best day of your life, and it is so true. Exactly a month ago I wed my best friend the amazing JMS. It is truly a day that has so many different, wonderful emotions that I can not even begin to describe until you experience it yourself. For those of you who are already married you know what I am talking about, and for those of you who are waiting to walk down that aisle it is well worth the wait to find that perfect person that will be there to greet you at the end. I will never forget the look on John's face, and the feeling of peace that came over me when I reached the top of that aisle. It was the BEST...simple pleasure ever.
After we had gotten engaged this past September, the biggest piece of advice that I got from friends that are married was to enjoy it, and that it goes by so fast. Fast is an understatement...the day literally flies by and when you take the elevator up to your room with the love of your life after you have said I do and shaking that booty all night long on the dance floor...the only words you can mutter besides I love you, is "That was absolutely amazing".
Our wedding day was filled with emotions, being an emotional person it definitely made for a lot of happy tears. The day is filled with so many amazing memories that I will share each week to all of you along with Nicole's Wedding Tips here on Simply Inspired. For my first Wedding post I wanted to talk about my favorite memory, and our crazy wedding blooper.
One thing I found was after we got engaged there were certain things I really, really, really wanted on the day of our wedding. John and I decided that we would each get to choose a few things that we would have no matter what. The first we decided upon (after we decided to go the big wedding route) was that we wanted a beautiful ceremony, and a great party. I think we accomplished both! Mine were Write own Vows and get a videographer. Johns main want, besides the sentimental stuff I had him agree to was open bar. I truly love this man. When you finally decide on what those wants are it is so neat to see them play out on the big day! For example the open bar worked really well on top of writing our vows. At 11:00PM the wedding planner came over to John and I and said "Mr. and Mrs. Semeraro open bar is suppose to turn to cash right now, but the bartender does not feel comfortable serving the majority of the people here" how bout that great party we wanted! (Note: Everyone was staying at the hotel so I am not promoting excessive amounts of libations at any wedding. Safety first!)
Back to my favorite memory, the vows! Often times like most people, I find I can express myself very well on paper. For the most important day of my life, I wanted to make sure I was able to express all of my love for John based on the vows that I had written. The day after the wedding when we were thinking back to all of the special moments we both agreed that it was the highlight of our day. Without further adieu...I feel so inclined to share both of our vows on this blog to inspire all you brides to consider doing so as well.
My Vows:
John, you are my best friend and the love of my life, you make me happier then I could ever imagine and more loved than I ever thought possible. From the day that I met you have inspired me, and now your love, and support continues to make me a better, stronger person every day.
There are so many things about you that made me fall in love with you. You are a genuinely good person in a world where genuineness is often times hard to find. You are the most passionate, loving, and caring person I have ever known, I truly admire everything about you.
I love you for the way you make me laugh, and when you laugh at my jokes even when you may not think they are funny.
I love you for always telling me that I can do it, and relentlessly supporting my goals and aspirations.
I love you because you love the simple pleasures of life, that fill our hearts with true happiness and that you wake up each day excited about what is to come.
In our life together…
I promise to be by your side through every curve ball life may throw, and for every wonderful memory we build together.
I promise to listen to you when needed, and offer advice when wanted, to encourage and inspire you, to laugh with you and cry with you in times of happiness and sorrow, and to you love you unconditionally for the rest of our life.
Our love and our life has made me a firm believer that everything in life happens for a reason and that dreams really do come true. I am so happy that you are the man that I get to fall asleep with every night, and wake up next to every morning (along with sports center of course) for the rest of my life . I am so blessed to get to share the journey of life with such an amazing man, and I know that with you by my side with your strength, courage and determination nothing can keep us from our dreams.
John's Vows:
Lucky me to be in love with my best friend, the one I laugh with, live for and love with all my heart. When you smile, my whole world smiles back in a way I never thought was possible. When I look into your gorgeous blue eyes I see our love for the dreams we have already built, the dreams we are still working on and the dreams we will dream up years from now.
Your beauty, passion and ambition are unmatched and I feel so blessed to be the recipient of your endless love. I treasure all the simple moments that make our relationship so special. The way you embrace every second we share, tilt your head for a picture, nurgle me on the couch, hold my hand on an evening walk, share a romantic note, dazzle me with your karaoke performances, talk in your funny Palin voice and always welcome every new adventure with an energetic smile. Enjoying these simple moments and more is what makes our love a once in a lifetime forever connection, that only exists between me and you.
The most wonderful of all things in my life was the discovery of you. Our love has defied time, distance and changes in ourselves and our lives. I am in awe of your zest for life, optimism, confidence and ability to always wear your heart on your sleeve. I adore you not just for who you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you for what you make of yourself, but also what you make of me.
I promise to be your best friend, to be a true and faithful husband and to love you and accept you unconditionally. I promise to laugh when times are good and to suffer with you when times are bad. I pledge to wash your tears away with my kisses, to respect and support you, to be patient and open with you and to encourage and inspire you as we work together to achieve our goals.
I give you my hand, my heart and my everlasting love and look forward to watching our life unfold while we enjoy the simple pleasures and abundance of love God will bring to our marriage each and every day.
Each time I read them I still get tears in my eyes, it was truly my favorite moment of the day! Weddings are filled with memories and even now a month after the wedding I am still hearing stories and memories from people about their travels to Boston, experience in Boston, and there take on the wedding My favorite quote from one of John's notorious groomsmen was "Can you guys get divorced in a month, and then remarried so you can have another wedding" We appreciate that feedback and are happy everyone had a great time, but we will only be doing this once.
Now with all the perfection there is always going to be a wedding story. Our wedding story was not any worse then anyone else's. (Note: I would love for all of you brides to post your wedding blooper in the comments section." At the time it was upsetting, and now it is just kind of funny! All I have to say is thank goodness for technology. Our wedding blooper goes like this:
Starting virtually the day after we were engaged I downloaded "Here Comes The Bride" off I-tunes to listen to through the wedding planning process. This version featured a loud, beautiful organ which was exactly what I wanted to walk down the aisle to on my big day. I listened to this over and over and over again through our 8 month engagement. I could not wait for the day of our wedding to hear the sound of that organ playing before I went down the aisle. Especially considering St. Leonards Church in the North End of Boston was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful and had a huge organ!
Five minutes before I am suppose to walk down the aisle, my bestest friend Erin (My MOH) comes down the stairs and says "Do you have the number to the organ player" Which was code for in my mind: the bastard is not here yet. What rushed through my head at that moment was pure, bridezilla panic. I consider myself to be one that handles pretty much any situation with a calm outlook, ultimately going into "I am going to solve this problem mode". Unfortunately Erin was faced with having to "Solve this problem" (HUGE problem). Erin proceeds to say "We have a solution, the guitar player is going to play" and my response to my poor best friend at this time was "I don't want a guitar"—picture loud, high pitched, spoiled brat response. Erin being the amazing friend that she says "ok" turns around walks back upstairs, to try to figure out. At this point it is chaos...I have two of my bridesmaids, as well as my flower girls mom running up Hanover St. going from bar to bar trying to find an organist. I am crying to my dad, and all the groomsmen are lined up in the hallway with the rest of the bridal party feeling badly, yet I know in the back of their mind they were thinking about how they could possible ICE someone in the church during this delay. Love you groomsmen :)
Five minutes later, my genius friend comes down with a 50% downloaded copy of "Here Comes The Bride" on her I-Phone. I guess I had listened to the song so much it was just meant to be for me to walk down the aisle to it. We had to get going at this point, so the processional started. Then we got to the doors and it was time for me, mom, and dad to walk down that aisle to the beautiful sounds of "Here Comes The Bride"....on an iphone.... held up to a microphone. Thank goodness the phone didn't ring. That my friends is the Semeraro Wedding Blooper.
Now as follow up to this story as most know what happened, but want to know the the end result. To cap this off I feel so inclined to let everyone know what actually happened to the organ man. He was in Colombia, South America and our wedding date got deleted from his blackberry. My initial reaction to this was to go ape S***, but in the grand scheme of things I realized it didn't matter because the show went on, and I am married to the love of my life, and now in complete newlywed bliss. On my part I will admit after thinking about it for a week after, I never actually followed up to remind him the week of the wedding as I did with all of my other vendors. Lesson learned, if I had followed up this may not have happened and my dream of walking down the aisle to that loud, blaring organ might have. Thank you I-Tunes you were just as good!
More fabulous wedding stories to come each week! If you have a wedding blooper that you want to share with Simply Inspired please post in the comments below, and if you have written your vows please post as well. I am sure "brides to be" would love some Simple Inspiration!
Nicole's Wedding Tips of The Week
1. Sit down with your prince charming and write 2 things that you each really want on the big day.
2. Follow up with every single one of your vendors a few days before the wedding.
3. Strongly consider writing your own vows, it is already a sacred moment but to personalize your vows make it that much more wonderful.
4. Enjoy every single second, get a videographer because the day is a blur and you will want to see all the stuff that went on behind the scenes.
Have a great week, and all my "brides to be" enjoy every second....because it flies by!

Here We Go..I guess I am now officially a "blogger"
Two days ago one of my bestest friends said that I should start a blog, and I decided it was a great idea. So now I am officially a blogger. The unfortunate thing is in my mind bloggers are super tech saavy (which I am totally not) it took me three hours to figure out how to change the font with this program. Needless to say, I am entering into a whole new world. I am somewhat embarrassed to admit my lack of tech saviness, but my motto has always been "surround yourself with successful people that know how to do all the things that you don't so you learn and become smarter." So I owe this one to my old friend Marissa Hyman, who is likely to be mentioned in a comedic fashion in this blog in the future. For those who know me, and know Hymer you know what I am talking about :)
Last night I told my husband, John that I was going to start a blog and he said what will it be about? (After he said so you are training for a triathlon, trying to join the LPGA, and now you want to write a blog....on top of now covering the entire US for work?) of course the answer was yes! The wedding is over and now I have to keep myself busy! Anyways, the answer to his question is as follows: I love to write, talk, and most importantly inspire those around me in any way possible. I consider myself to be an overly enthusiastic, and eternal optimist that loves life. With that said I feel as though maybe by writing this blog I may make a difference in someones life or offer a thought that may change the way someone thinks.
I came up with the name Simply Inspired because I love simple life pleasures and inspiring those around me. All through college, and now through life I find myself constantly embracing simple pleasures with the ones that I love. Simple pleasures are those little things that don't cost money, but are ultimately those moments of pure happiness when you sit back and say "aaahhhh life is good." My friends have teased me for a long time about how whenever we are out together I will randomly say "What a simple pleasure"—they may tease but I know they love them as much as I do!
My goal for this blog is also to provide insight into a variety of topics. Each day of the week I am going to post to a different topic that I think to be interesting/exciting/captivating at this point in my life. Being almost the ripe old age of 28 I feel like I can at least offer some words of wisdom on topics that effect all of us as women! I want to make you laugh, cry, smile, motivate, (likely to potentially piss you off at some point with my opinions, JK) and ultimately give you a daily dose of simple inspiration.
Each Week I will be posting the following:
Each Month I will be featuring a different book for Nicole's Book Club. I think this is partially my way of forcing myself to read something other then the newspaper, work related books, and Facebook status updates. Plus sitting down with a good book I believe to be one of life's best simple pleasures (Add a beach and a margarita and that simple pleasure turns into fabulous times 100!)
I mentioned Topics above, I know blogs are suppose to be about whatever you are thinking about or have a different theme but for right now I hope to write about the following topics each week: Careers, Fitness, Wedding Bliss, Life, and Interesting Topics In The News. My goal is too have a topic that fits everyone's different interests!
Well now that I have everyone COMPLETELY on the edge of their seats about what is to come each day of the week sit, back, relax, and if you are reading this at night grab a glass of vino!

- Vendor Of The Week
- Simple Pleasure Of The Week
- Words Of Widsom From NBS
